About Macon

Looking at Macon for your new hometown?  Just look at what we have to offer!

Macon homes run the full gamut of style, size and character for both the young and the young at heart.  Our neighborhoods are well designed, well kept and near schools, churches, and shopping.

Two of our oldest buildings have been completely restored and are home to many of our seniors.  These two structures reflect a unique architecture which is representative of the housing you’ll find throughout the community.  Of course, you’ll also find homes which are more traditional in nature.  All are affordable with housing prices lower than other mid-western cities and much lower than homes on either coast.  This is all due to the low cost of living you’ll find here.

Macon County offers some of the best antique shops in Missouri .  People travel from all over to shop and browse through the over 20 different craft, antique, and collectible shops in Macon County

Step back in time in one of Macon County ’s museums or visit one of the area’s historical buildings.  Several homes and public buildings in the area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In Macon , a variety of churches, clubs and organizations reflect our dedication to the community we serve.  Newcomers and new members are welcome and encouraged to join the folks that work to ensure a higher quality of life for all our citizens.

But there’s much more to life in Macon than just work.  There’s recreation, and lots of it.  Our park system is one of the finest around with eight public parks, public tennis courts and three swimming pools.  As the county seat, we are also home to the Macon County Fairgrounds and the myriad of activities you’ll enjoy there throughout the year.  Festivities like old-fashioned ice cream socials, picnics and parades are all part of the heritage of our mid-western lifestyle.

For the active sports enthusiast, Macon County is widely known for its excellent hunting, fishing, and water sports.  Each year, hunters bag record numbers of wildlife in our fields and woods.  We have many small ponds where you can catch bass or crappie.  We have one of the finest Army Corp of Engineers lake in the Midwest and nearly 25, 000 acres of water where fresh water fishing, boating, skiing, swimming and sunning are enjoyed throughout the seasons.  Macon is also home to a fine Country Club with a manicured golf course and pool.  Other recreational possibilities include bowling lanes, campgrounds, a fitness center, YMCA, and more.

But if spectating is a more appealing sport, we offer world renowned exotic animal sales, grand national tractor pulls, historic places, natural wonders, festivals, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rodeo, vintage car shows, community theater and a three screen movie theater.
